Lee Ali will be teaching a medley of various Moroccan dances to students who may or may not have not had the experience of learning these rare folk dances from North Africa. Sheikhat is the name for professional female entertainers who sing and dance in the cities, where alcohol is served, and throughout the countryside at weddings, births, and Moussems (festivals of the saints). Students may also learn basic 6/8 rhythms and drill the fundamentals of Moroccan dance including footwork, pelvic isolations and the signature hair tosses.
Lotus D'Or welcomes this unique and outstanding instructor!

About Lee Ali
Lee Ali is a specialist in Moroccan dance and folklore. She is a multi-talented dancer, singer and drummer with a vast artistic repertoire and performance history. Lee began her career in the late 1970's; the golden era of "old style" belly dance. Lee is dedicated to teaching and preserving the dance and folk traditions of Morocco and the Middle East. Her Mom is Moroccan and her Dad is Turkish-Armenian. Dancing professionally since childhood, Lee has performed more than 2,000 dance shows in the US, and abroad including a 2-year road tour in Greece. For 8 years, she was director of her own dance studio in the Arab quarter of Brooklyn, New York, where she taught Middle Eastern dance, weight training and yoga. She is an IDEA certified fitness trainer and a certified yoga instructor from the Satchidananda Ashram. In 1996, she produced the documentary film: Belly Dancing In America: exploring the history and diversity of Middle Eastern dance. Lee was director of the Berber Ballet, a dance and drum ensemble specializing in modernized dances of Morocco and the Maghreb. A skillful drummer and percussionist, Lee plays the tbal, (a double-sided drum traditionally played by men) and sings Arabic, Greek and French. Lee holds a bachelors degree in Psychology from UC, Irvine and is currently writing a book on Moroccan dance and trance rituals.

A Very Special Performance Sunday Evening in Downtown Sacramento!
Lee Ali will perform Sunday evening after the workshop in Downtown Sacramento. The FREE show will take place at the opulent Kasbah Lounge on J Street between 21st & 22nd Sts. next to Tapa The World. Manasa will also perform a special North African inspired American Tribal Belly Dance set "Calling North Africa". Please come and enjoy awesome food and drinks and be prepared for a special Night in the Mahgreb! Plus...surprises!
