Learn some vocabulary from this rich, expressive dance tradition, and then integrate it with belly dance movements. We will work with traditional music, focusing on 9/8 rhythm, the symbiosis between Turkish Rom music and dance, some basic footwork as well as hip work and pantomime from the Rom of Istanbul; then using a modern western fusion song with the same rhythm, we will create a combo that is also western fusion, but accurately draws on traditional folkloric dance.
BIO:
As a young girl, Elizabeth Strong ran around the house with scarves dancing to Eastern European Music, inspired by the Middle Eastern dancers she had watched at folk music gatherings. At the age of eighteen, she began formal studies of belly dance in Santa Cruz and Marin, and in 2000 she took the first of her grand trips to the Mediterranean to immerse herself in dance and culture in Tunisia, Turkey, and Eastern Europe. Her studies since then have included whatever she can find as she travels in the Old World, always returning to the melting pot of the San Francisco Bay Area for further enrichment. Her most recent performances include: the 2007 production of People Like Me with Shuvani, presented by World Arts West; The Premiere performance of "Musical Fortunes" in the 2007 Bay Area Jewish Music Festival; The Pogonometric Revue Tour in 2006 with the Toids, Rachel Brice and Mardi Love; collaberation with Jill Parker's Ultra Gypsy Dance Theatre Company for Undulation 2006; and performances in the 2006 and 2007 Herdeljezi Festivals presented by Voice of Roma. She has taught at festivals and events nation wide, including Tribal Quest Northwest, Tribal Fest, Tribal Alchemy, TribalCon and Kosmos World Music and Dance Camp.
