I came across another rare live performance of North African music. Even if you can't make the show, you can read more about the Touareg tribe of the Imazighen people on their web site. Here is an excerpt from the Tinariwen web site:
"The Tinariwen story is already well marinated in startling myths; fierce nomadic desert tribesmen toting guns and guitars, Ghadaffi's poet-soldiers spreading their gospel of freedom throughout the world, turbaned rock'n'roll troubadours, Stratocaster on one shoulder, Kalashnikov on the other, 17 bullet wounds and rawest desert blues on earth. All this fabulous imagery is the modern equivalent of the legends that have always stuck to Tinariwen's people, the nomadic Touareg of the southern Sahara; the noble desert warrior, the blue man, the lord of the desert, mysterious, secretive, covered from head to toe with eyes only bared to the world."
Tinariwen/Vieux Farka Toure Desert Guitar Summit

AND one more amazing artist on Wednesday....
I really want to go to this one, but it's also in San Francisco...
Marcel Khalife, he is a United Nations Educational, scientific and cultural organization "Artist for Peace". Not even Bono can say the same.
And yet, ironically, some weeks ago a venue in San Diego denied the artist to perform. The manager of the venue felt the show would be "divisive" and "unbalanced" without an Israeli performer taking the stage the same night. It's tough to tell if this is political correctness run amok or the problem is Khalifé being Arab and this being a Christian-run venue in George Bush's America?! Khalife has faced persecution in the Middle East, but never something this inflammatory in the U.S.A. Earlier this year, a performance of his was denounced in the Persian Gulf island nation Bahrain, and Khalife's music was also recently banned from radio, television, and on stage in Tunisia. Damned in parts of the Middle East for supporting freedom of expression, it is ironic that in the U.S.A. he would find similar efforts to quiet him. Music is the most peaceful way of expression - Musicians have for years fought the war of free expression through sound & rhythm. Songs coming from Palestinian musicians have a story to tell that we are certainly not receiving from mainstream media. | |

Frequently referred to as the "Berber" people the true name which they call themselves is Imazighen, which translates to the free people. The Imazighen are the indigenous people of North Africa. From Moh's web site, www.flagoffreedom.com
here are some more details: "The origin of Imazighen (first known inhabitants of North Africa) is a mystery. Research has produced an abundance of educational speculation, but no definitive solution. Paintings of over 5000 years old are the most complete existing record of prehistoric North Africa (Tamazgha). Imazighen were invaded by, among others, Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantine, Arabs, Turks, and French. It was recorded once only in history, that in the 7th century, when they invaded the Iberian Peninsula, where they stayed for almost eight centuries. There, they were known as the Moorish.
Richard Fletcher, author of "Moorish Spain" wrote in his book"
"Who were these conquerors, who so quickly and so completely overturned the strongest Western European Monarchy of their day? It is customary to refer to these stirring events as the 'Arab' or the 'Islamic' invasion and conquest of Spain. But only in a very limited sense was it either Arab or Islamic. It was mainly Berber."
Imazighen are found throughout North Africa. They are spread from Western Egypt in the East till the Canary Islands in the West, encompassing Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, including sub-Saharan regions, such as Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. They are the majority in Algeria (40%?)and in Morocco, (65%?), and verymuch less in other countries. Imazighen, wherever they live, continue to struggle to maintain their identity. Today We believe that there are about 25 million people in North Africa and in the diaspora who speak this ancient 'Tamazight' language. Imazighen have NO one from the world stage on their side.
